Carlton Edward Alford, Sr., 81, of LaGrange, Georgia passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022, at his home on West Point Lake, with his family by his side.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2022, at Striffler-Hamby Funeral Home in Columbus, Georgia, with burial the following Monday at Park Hill Cemetery, 10 a.m.

Carlton Alford was born on Jan. 7, 1941, in Columbus, Georgia, the son of Cleveland and Minnie Estelle Alford. Carlton was the fourth of seven siblings; Jeannie McGuire, the late Denton Alford, the late Dewey Alford, Johnny Alford, Larry Alford and Jerry Alford.

He met the love of his life, the late Brenda Alford, when he was 14 years old. They married on Aug. 19, 1960, and celebrated 60 years of marriage.

He attended Jordan High School and grew up in Jordan City with the Boy’s Club just outside his front door, where he spent much time. Early in life he worked at Jordan Mill, then later spent 28 years serving the public at the Columbus Fire Department, retiring in 1995 as a Lieutenant.

Carlton was a member of Fountain Church in LaGrange, Georgia. His joys were college football, especially the Alabama Crimson Tide, going to Panama City Beach, fishing, and being with family at every occasion. He loved taking his grandchildren for boat rides on West Point Lake.

Survivors include his four children: Wendy LaPierre (John) of Columbus; Melody Trevathan (Ronnie) of Columbus; Carlee Bland (Mark) of Fortson; Carlton Alford Jr. of LaGrange. He has 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. His grandchildren are Mindi Anderson (Todd) of Columbus; Jeremy LaPierre (Tara) of Buford; Melissa Shelley of Tucson, Arizona; Pamela Lee (Gary) of Ellerslie; Brian Trevathan (Brooke) of Hamilton; Trevor Bland (Kendall) of Columbus; Whitney Bland (James) of Columbus; Brett Milam (Jamiraquoi) of Fortson; Ivey Milam (Alex) of Fortson; Blake Alford of Norwalk, Connecticut. Carlton is also survived by his sister, Jeannie McGuire of Columbus; Brothers Johnny Alford of Cataula; Jerry Alford of Cataula; Larry Alford of Hamilton.  Additionally, he is survived by many nieces and nephews.
