Local GHSA region basketball tournaments tip off next week with a place in the state tournaments on the line. The top four teams from each region move onto the state tournament. As top two seeds, the Callaway girls and boys teams and LaGrange boys team have already cemented themselves a spot in the state tournament. The Troup County girls and boys teams will try to make a region tournament run to get to the state tournament. The first round of the state tournaments tip off on Tuesday Feb. 22. Here’s a look at each tournament:

Boys region tournament preview

LaGrange High School

The Grangers boys basketball team will be competing in the 4A region 2 tournament. LaGrange finished as the no. 2 team in the standings, which grants them a first and second round bye. The Grangers finished with a record of 20-5 overall and 13-3 in the region. They will play a semifinal matchup against the winner of no. 3 Shaw vs no. 6 Carver/No.7 Columbus. The Grangers went a perfect 6-0 against their three possible opponents during the regular season. The Grangers semifinal match will be played in Columbus at Spencer High School on Friday Feb. 18.  A win for the Grangers would put them in the region championship game on Saturday Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at Spencer High School. A loss would mean the Grangers would play in the third place game on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. at the same location. The Grangers will be hungry to get to the championship game as it would allow them to host a first round playoff game regardless if they win or lose.

Troup County High School

The Troup County Tigers will have an uphill battle in the 4A region 2 tournament. The Tigers squeaked into the tournament by getting the final seed, pushing Jordan High School out of the tournament.

Troup County comes into the tournament with an overall record of 4-17 and a regional record of 4-12. As the eighth seed, the Tigers will have to play a first round matchup against fifth seed Kendrick High School. The game will be played at Kendrick High School in Columbus on Tuesday Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Troup County lost both of their regular season games against Kendrick by single-digits. If Troup County can pull off the upset, it will have to turn around and travel to Hardaway High School on Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m. Troup County lost both of its regular season games against Hardaway by a combined 14 points. Troup County will have to win both games on the opponents’ court to get to the semifinals, which would get the Tigers into the state tournament.

Callaway High School

The Callaway Cavaliers will be hosting the semifinals and the finals of the 2A region 5 tournament. Callaway earned the top seed in the region by going a flawless 8-0 in region play and finished the season at 16-6 overall. By earning one of the top three seeds, the Cavaliers will be in the state tournament regardless of their performance in the region tournament.

The Cavaliers will host their semifinal matchup on Thursday Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. A win will see them play for the championship on their home floor on Feb. 19. at 4:30 p.m.

A loss will see Callaway play in the third place game on Feb. 19 at 3 p.m. on their home court. The Cavaliers beat all their region opponents but had some close calls in the region, including a narrow one point win over Temple two weeks ago.

Girls region tournaments preview

LaGrange High School

As the last placed team in the 4A region 2 standings, the Grangers missed the region tournament and subsequently missed a shot to make the state tournament.

The Grangers had a chance to make the region tournament in their regular season finale but lost to Hardaway. The Grangers will have to look themselves in the mirror over a long offseason after finishing 2-23 overall.

Troup County High School

Troup County will be competing in the 4A region 2 region tournament after finishing as no. 3 team in the standings. This grants the Tigers a first-round bye and a chance to host the quarterfinals. The Tigers quarterfinal matchup will be on Wednesday Fab. 16 at 7:30 p.m. against the winner of the Kendrick/Jordan game. Troup County went a perfect 4-0 against its possible quarterfinal opponents during the regular season. The Tigers finished the regular season 13-12 overall and 11-5 in region play. Troup County won six of their last seven games of the season to take some momentum into the region tournament.

This game will be a must win for the Tigers if they want to make the state tournament. A semifinal appearance will be enough to get the Tigers into the state tournament.

The Tigers’ possible semifinal game would be against the two seed, Hardaway High School. This game will take place at Carver High School in Columbus on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. Troup County lost both its regular season matchups against Hardaway. 

Callaway High School

The Callaway Cavaliers are looking to repeat as region winners in the 2A region 5. The Cavaliers earned the no. 1 seed in the region tournament by going a perfect 8-0 in the region and finished the season 17-4. Callaway High School will host the semifinals, third place game, and the final for the region.

The Cavaliers earned a first-round bye and will play their semifinal matchup against the winner of the Temple/Bremen game on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m. The team will play again on Friday in either the championship game at 7:30 p.m. or the third place game at 6:00 p.m. Callaway will play the winner or loser of the Haralson/Heard County game.

The Cavaliers won all but one region game by double-digits and are riding a five-game win streak heading into the region tournament.
