The Troup County girls basketball team pulled off a nail biting upset over Hardaway 52-51 Thursday to punch their ticket to the region final. The Tigers trailed after every quarter but the final one. This was especially impressive after losing both their regular season games to Hardaway. The Tigers clawed and fought their way to a victory and are now guaranteed to host at least one game in the state tournament.

The first quarter was tightly contested with the Hawks taking a two-point lead. The Hawks were able to stretch the lead up to seven at the half but could not pull away from the Tigers.

The Tigers’ defense ramped up in the third quarter, only allowing the Hawks to score six points. The Tigers trimmed the lead down to three and gave themselves some life heading into the fourth. 

Angie Dowell scored six points in the final quarter to lead the Tigers to the upset. She totaled 16 points which was the highest on the team along with Alexcia Murphy. The next highest scorer had seven points for the Tigers as it was a two-woman show on offense. 

The Tigers are going to have to pull off another upset if they are to win the region championship. They will travel to Spencer High School in Columbus to take on top seeded Carver High School–which has not dropped a single game in region play this year. The game is Saturday at 5 p.m. Troup County lost by at least 15 points in both games against Carver in the regular season.
