The Troup County girls basketball could not overcome the odds as they fell to Carver in the Region 5-AAAA championship game 64-53 on Saturday. The Tigers were swept by Carver during the regular season and could not pull off the upset on Saturday.

The Tigers hung tough early, only trailing by six after the first quarter, but their defense got off to a shaky start, allowing 24 points in the first quarter. 

The Tigers offense went ice cold in the second quarter, only amassing nine points as Carver was able to stretch their lead up to double-digits at the break. The Tigers could never get back in the game after the slow start. 

The second half went better for the Tigers as they scored the same amount of points in the half as Carver (26), but it was too little too late for the Tigers as they could not claw their way back into the game.

It was a two woman show on offense for the Tigers as Alexcia Murphy and Angie Dowdell combined for 38 of the teams 53 points— Murphy finished with a game high 22 points. The Tigers only had five players in the scoring column with their two leading scorers being the only two to reach double figures. 

Troup County will rue their missed chances as the team only went 13 for 27 from the free throw line.

The Tigers enter the state tournament as a no. 2 seed, which means they will get to host their first round matchup against Spalding High School next week.
