Cavaliers extend winning streak to nine to start season

The Callaway girls soccer team kept its hot start to the season alive with a 10-0 mercy rule win Friday over Bowdon High School. It’s the ninth straight win to start the season for the Cavaliers, but this is their first mercy rule victory on the year.
Kate McAteer scored her first goal in the fifth minute and her third goal in the seventh minute as she scored a hat trick in less than three minutes. She added a fourth in the 52nd minute as she was the star for the Cavaliers on the night. The third goal was the best of the bunch as she set the ball and took a quick free kick form about 25 yards out and rocketed it into the top corner.
“We run our offense through her,” Head Coach Mike Petite said. “We want her getting the ball and making decisions off that.”
Keely McGuffin was the playmaker for the Cavaliers as she ended the game with two goals and two assists. McGuffin hit an absolute missile from 40 yards out that slipped through the goalie’s hands and into the back of the net for her first goal in what would earn goal of the match. She could also be seen consoling one of her teammates on the sideline after she missed a chance to score a goal.
The Cavaliers were up 6-0 at the break and it only got worse for Bowdon from there. The team came into the game with only two substitutes and lost two players to injury in the game to leave them with only the 11 players on the pitch.
Emily Lindsey had the only save on the night as she and Raine Hunt combined to keep the Cavaliers third straight clean sheet. The team has kept five clean sheets in nine games.
The Cavaliers made multiple platoon swaps in both halves to get their reserves some valuable playing time.
“We have to approach the season like were 0-0, we could finish as a fourth seed or a first seed in the region,” Petite said.
Callaway starts region play in the next game against Bremen on Tuesday. Despite the best start in the Cavaliers history, the games mean little as the region games are what will decide if Callaway makes the playoffs or not.
