1939-2022

Betty Todd Knight, cherished wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away in her home Friday, March 4, 2022, surrounded by those who loved her dearly, including her husband Walton Hooper Knight, Jr., and her daughters Natalie Hale (Robert), Gail Gilmartin (Michael), and Cindy Lanier (Casey). Her grandchildren, who affectionately called her “Bubba,” include Hannah Hale, Hallie Hale, Michael Gilmartin, Jr., Sarah Gilmartin, Jacob Johnston, Abbi Lynn Lanier, Walton Lanier, and Adeline Lanier.

Born and raised in LaGrange, Georgia, Betty attended LaGrange High School, where she began dating Walt. Upon graduation in 1957, she attended the University of Georgia and completed her education degree at LaGrange College. She married Walt in 1962 and their love story spanned over six decades.

Betty’s most treasured role was being a loving wife to Walt, and raising their daughters and grandchildren. Prior to becoming a mother, Betty had a brief career in teaching where she taught elementary and middle school.

Alongside being a mother, Betty was active in the community serving as a member of the Leadership Board at LaGrange College and of the Talisman Garden Club. Seeing the need for a publication to promote tourism and community events in the area, she founded the popular magazine, Round and ‘Bout Troup County, which she published for over 25 years.

Betty loved to travel and circled the globe through trips alongside family and friends. Summer beach trips with her family were a favorite of hers – she led nightly cards games with her grandchildren and passed on her love of games to each of them. Her love of games extended to Bridge Club and Mahjong.

She took pride in planning high school reunions and staying in touch with those who were significant in her life – no matter the time period they entered it. Whether it be a friend from high school or a couple they met once married through one of the multiple supper clubs they were a part of, Betty always took the time to make everyone feel seen, heard and loved.

In addition to her husband, daughters, and grandchildren, Betty is survived by one uncle, Lewis Todd. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Allene Todd, and several aunts and uncles.

Betty was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange. It is here that her celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Thread (P.O. Box 19, LaGrange, Georgia, 30241) or a charity of choice in honor of Betty Knight.
