The Callaway baseball team mercy-ruled Woodberry Forest 10-0 in the sixth inning on Wednesday. 

The Cavaliers combined to allow only two hits in the game. Justin Moore got the start on the mound and was electric as he struck out nine batters and only allowed two hits through five innings pitched. He helped himself at the plate as well with two RBIs. 

Brantin Swanson came in to relieve Moore in the sixth inning and got three outs on only 15 pitches.

The Cavaliers could not muster a run in the first inning but scored in the second when CJ Stephens scored on a passed ball. Callaway added two more runs in the third inning on a Moore sacrifice fly and Tucker Starling scored on an error later in the inning. 

Moore got his second RBI of the game when he grounded out with the bases loaded to drive Jacob Karvelas home. 

It was three up and three down for both teams in the fifth inning before the Cavaliers’ offense exploded in the sixth to force the mercy rule. Bryce Hubbard singled on a line drive to left field to drive in Jacob Karvelas to get the scoring started in the sixth. Pinch hitter Avery Bartlett singled on a pop fly to right field to drive Hubbard and Starling home. Another pinch hitter, David Karvelas, stepped up to the plate and was hit by a pitch to score another run. This was followed by Dylan Nation walking to drive home a run and give the Cavaliers a 9-0 lead. Houston Wilson hit a single to right field to score Swanson and end the game on a mercy rule. 

Bryce Hubbard was outstanding at the plate as he went two for three with the team’s only extra-base hit — a double –, two runs, one RBI, and one walk. The top of the order was the catalyst for the Cavaliers with Jacob Karevelas, Hubbard and Starling combining for six hits and six runs.

Callaway is now 5-3 on the season and has won four of the last five games with all four wins coming by shutout. The Cavaliers next game is away to Landmark Christian on March 10.
