The LaGrange Police Department responded to the sound of an “explosion” on New Franklin Road Wednesday afternoon but did not find the cause of the sound.

Eric Lohr with the LaGrange Police Department said the LPD had responded to a call of shots fired in the Mooty Bridge Road and New Franklin Road area.

“As of right now, we have discovered nothing,” he said, adding that the sounds of the explosion may have been misinterpreted as the shots fired. “We assumed it may have been a transformer or an underground gas line or something right now, but right now we have no definitive information that anything happened.”

Irisha Goodman, the Troup County School System’s director of public relations, said Franklin Forest Elementary School was briefly put on a soft lockdown following the sound. LPD soon gave them the all-clear to reopen the school.

Goodman added that she heard something similar to a booming sound when she was at her residence in the area.

One business owner on Mooty Bridge Road who contacted the LDN said the sound was so loud it shook their office.
