Cavaliers sweep double header against Temple led by CJ Stephens and Tucker Starling

The Callaway baseball team swept a double header against Temple on Thursday.

The Cavaliers dominated the first game 13-3 that ended in six innings.

The Cavaliers got the scoring started when Andrew Locke scored on an error in the top of the first inning. Justin Moore added a second run when he hit a sacrifice fly to plate Houston Wilson.

Temple stuck back and cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the first.

Callaway’s offense got right back to work in the second inning and added a third run when Bryce Hubbard hit an RBI single. CJ Stephens garnered two RBIs when he hit a line drive to left field to give the Cavaliers a 5-1 lead.

Temple answered back with another run in the bottom of the second inning.

Jacob Karvelas hit an RBI sacrifice fly to start the Cavaliers scoring in the top of the third inning. Locke hit a double to left field to score another run in the inning before Hubard and Tucker Starling produced RBIs on the next at-bats for Callaway.

The scoring ceased until Karvelas hit a line drive single in the top of the fifth to score Stephens and make it a 10-2 lead for the Cavaliers.

Stephens, Julian Dukes, and Lashun Gates all had RBIs in the top of the sixth to give Callaway a commanding 13-2 lead.

Temple added a third run in the bottom of the sixth, but it was not enough to halt the run rule from being implemented.

Stephens was the player of the game as he went three of four from the plate with one run scored, four RBIs and a walk. Hubbard also had three hits in four plate appearances as well.

Starling got the start on the mound and pitched all six innings. He only allowed four hits and two earned runs and had five strikeouts. He also helped himself at the plate with three hits in four plate appearances with an RBI thrown in for good measure.

The second game of the double header was much different in nature as the Cavaliers earned a 4-1 victory.

The scoring did not start until Moore hit a sacrifice fly to score Starling in the top of the fourth.

The Cavaliers added another run in the following inning when Hubbard hit a single to drive in Avery Hewell to give Callaway a 2-0 lead.

Moore was at it again from the plate as he singled on a ground ball to center field to get another RBI in the top of the sixth.

Temple got one back in the bottom of the sixth to make it 3-1 Callaway.

Locke scored on a passed ball to score the Cavaliers fourth run of the game in the top of the seventh inning.

Locke was the star from the plate in the second game as he went three for three with a run scored. Starling showed up again from the plate in the second game as well as he went two for three with two runs scored and a walk.

Hubbard got the start on the mound in the second game and pitched four and 1/3rd innings. He only allowed three hits and struck out nine batters.

Karvelas came in to relieve Hubbard and was stellar in his two and 2/3rds innings of work. He allowed one hit, one earned run and struck out four batters.

Callaway improved to 9-3 overall and 3-0 in region play. The Cavaliers next game is at Heard County on March 22.
