The Hogansville Pine Needle Garden Club honored one of their long-time members Friday, March 18, during a special memorial service at the LaGrange Active Life Center. Theresa “Tee” Hug Borders, a LaGrange resident and Pine Needle Garden Club member, passed away on Jan. 27, 2022. To honor her love for nature and kindness, club members decided to do something for her that would last for decades.

“The club unanimously decided we wanted to show our love and respect for Tee by planting a tree at a place that was dear to her heart,” said Stephanie Culver, president of the Pine Needle Garden Club.

The tree the club chose is a Serviceberry tree, a native known for its delicate blossoms, its summer fruit and its lovely bark in winter.

“Like Tee, it is beautiful in all seasons,” Culver said.

Club members and Active Life heads met for a short ceremony for Borders during the tree planting where they presented a special resolution to be presented to Borders’ children, Tommy Borders, Rosanna Borders, John Borders and Belinda Borders.

The resolution stated that Borders was an enthusiastic Master Gardener who generously shared both her knowledge of horticulture and the bounty of her garden. She was also a Master Flower Shop Judge, a Landscape Design Consultant, a Gardening Consultant and a Deep South Mentor through the National Garden Clubs.

She shared her floral abilities with the served lovingly on the Alter Guild of First United Methodist Church and the Community Care ministry.

Dan Wooten, the aging services manager for the Troup County Parks and Recreation Department, said Borders was an active and admired member of the Senior Center.

“She was the epitome of an “active” senior,” Wooten said.
