The LaGrange High School baseball team fell to the reigning AAAA state champions Marist 9-4 on Monday. The loss snapped an eight-game win streak for the Grangers. It was a good test for LaGrange, but they were not up to the task despite keeping the game close for the first few innings.

The War Eagles got the scoring started early when they scored two runs in the top of the first inning.

The Grangers were able to strike back and tie the game with a two-run third inning. Trey Cook started the scoring for LaGrange with an RBI single. Robbie Parker scored on an error to tie the game in the bottom of the third inning.

The tie did not last long as the War Eagles scored four runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 6-2 lead.

Zach Thompson hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to cut the lead to three. The Grangers could have cut the lead even further, but Gryson Cockrell was called out at home on the play.

Marist added another three runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the Grangers in a tough situation.

The Grangers added a consolation run in the bottom of the seventh when Thompson hit a sacrifice fly, but by then the game was too far out of hand for the Grangers to complete a comeback.

Trey Cook got the start on the mound but struggled to control the Blue Devils bats in his four innings on the mound. The Grangers then used Robbie Parker in relief who also had a rough night against Marist’s formidable lineup. Preston Pressley pitched the final inning and did not allow a hit.

Thompson had the best day offensively for the Grangers as he went two for two with two RBIs and being hit by a pitch to reach base in all three of his at-bats. Cook and Colton Esposito also had solid games from the plate as they each went two for three with Cook adding an RBI to his ledger.

The Grangers fall to 14-5 overall and are 8-0 in the region. LaGrange now leads Region 2-AAAA by 1.5 games over Troup County High School. The Grangers next game is a non-region home game against Smiths Station (Alabama) on Wednesday.
