The Troup baseball team split a pair of games against Benedictine in the quarterfinals of the playoffs on Monday. The night was so much more than that as Reed Morris delivered a grand slam walk off in game two to force a game three.

Morris has been on an absolute tear in the playoffs (seven games) as he is currently batting .435 with five home runs — two of them grand slams — and 22 RBIs.

The first game was a game to forget for the Tigers as they were dominated 8-1.

The Cadets got off to a hot start with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The score stayed deadlocked until the Cadets added an additional four runs in the fourth and a lone run in the sixth to take an 8-1 lead.

Daniel Martin grounded into a fielder’s choice to score a run in the seventh to give the Tigers their only run in the game. The Tigers were not quite able to pull off one of those miraculous late game rallies they have been known for.

Ty Medders, Josh Mcdonald and Brett Haynes all had a hit apiece as all the other Tigers ‘batters could not get the offense going.

Devon Murphy got the start on the mound with Demetrius Hardnett and Fisher Baltzell coming into relieve him.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair with five total lead changes, but it was Morris who stole the show with a massive grand slam walk off to give the Tigers a 9-8 victory.

The Tigers took the first lead of the game when Murphy hit an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning. The Cadets took the lead in the top of the third inning when they scored two runs.

Troup answered back to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Haynes hit a solo shot over the wall to tie the game at two before Mason Atkinson scored on an error later in the inning to give the Tigers the lead once again.

The Cadets scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to recapture the momentum.

The Tigers chipped away at the lead when Reed Morris hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.

That was only the appetizer as Morris promptly hit a grand slam walk off in his next at bat in the seventh inning.

Morris went 2-for-4 in the game with both hits being home runs and a whopping six RBIs. After pitching the first game, Murphy got to work offensively in game two as he went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Haynes’ solo shot was pivotal as he went 1-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

Daniel Martin got the start on the mound and went four and 2/3rds innings. Tripp Cummings came in to relieve him and shut the door on the Cadet offense as he allowed no hits over two and 1/3rd innings with three strikeouts.

Troup will play a game three against Benedictine on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The winner of that game will advance to the state semifinals.
