LaGrange’s Camp Cowpie, a Cub Scout Day Camp, is still accepting applications for its 51st summer session.

The camp, held the first week in June 6 – 10 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m., is hosted in the spacious yard of its director, Martha Evans. Campers will take part in several outdoor activities, including archery, songs, sports activities, arts and crafts, hiking and wildlife identification.

“My objective is to let the children feel comfortable in nature,” Evans said.

“I don’t want them to be afraid of bugs or snakes, I want them to know there are different kinds of lizards. I want them to learn not only to respect nature but to embrace it.”

The camp is specified for children ages 7-11 years old, though children as old as 13 are allowed to participate as leaders of each group. Other adults can volunteer as well following passing the Youth Protection training required by Boy Scouts of America.

On top of activities, campers receive special visits from community organizations, including Callaway Gardens. Daily, campers can compete to have the camp’s signature wooden cow stay in their unit. On the final day of the camp, campers will have a camp-style barbecue and water day, one of the most sought-after days for the campers, Evans said.

Campers will be given a Camp Cowpie t-shirt, and are asked to wear dark-colored shorts, socks and closed-toe shoes. Items such as spare clothes, insect repellant and sunscreen are encouraged.

All campers must bring a non-perishable sack lunch every day except on Friday when lunch will be provided.
