The Kiwanis Club of LaGrange, Georgia presented five high school students in Troup County with the Robert E. Gordon Scholarship during their meeting at the Highland Country Club on Thursday.

The five students are also Key Club members at their schools, one of the three area clubs the Kiwanis Club actively supports. The scholarships were funded through the Kiwanis Club’s annual pancake breakfast, which helped garner $8,000 for the scholarships. 

According to keyclub.org, in partnership with their local Kiwanis Club, high school students are making a positive impact as they serve others in their schools and communities.

Callaway High School recipients included Seongyeon (Alex) Cho who received $2,500 and Malini Patel who received $1,500.

Troup High School recipients included Mary Smith who received $2,000, Linda Grace Corley who received $1,000 and Sarah Blanks who received $1,000.

According to the Kiwanis Club, Dr. Robert E. Gordon became an active member of the LaGrange Kiwanis Club in the late 1980s. While at the LaGrange Kiwanis, he was passionate about giving his time to the Kiwanis’s mission of helping the children and youth of our community.

Before his death, he had an idea of funding a scholarship for high school students which was brought before the board of directors after his death for approval with the support of his two daughters, Dr. Claire C. Gordon and Martha Lee Gordon.

The Gordon Scholarship Program seeks to recognize and reward students from Troup County, Georgia who have demonstrated potential for leadership in service to their fellow citizens, whose academic profile is indicative of success at the college or university level, and whose extracurricular activities are rich in service to the community and to their fellow human beings.
