We know we’re preaching to the choir here, as we’re sure our newspaper readers are the safest drivers on the roadway. However, we’re going to ask you to slow down anyways, especially when you’re on racetrack 85 — err interstate 85.

Everyone has somewhere they need to be. Whether it’s a doctor’s appointment or being late for work, we all have limited time in our schedules. Very few of us, if ever, have the opportunity to take a slow drive around the county just for our enjoyment.

That means everyone is trying to get somewhere, and unfortunately, some drivers believe the speed limit is a suggestion rather than a mandatory number. And let’s be honest — we’ve all driven over 70 miles per hour on the interstate — but driving, like many other activities in life require common sense.

The difference in driving 75 MPH and 70 isn’t really substantial over 20 or 30 minutes.

Whipping around a slower car or two into the passing lane might allow you to continue traveling 90 miles per hour without hitting the brake, but was it really worth it? The interstate isn’t a place to practice for your non-existent dreams of participating in the Daytona 500.

Driving is an activity where if you do it right 99.9% of the time, it still probably isn’t good enough. Just one false move or one time not paying attention could change your life, your family’s life or another family’s life forever. If you ever once drive poorly, you might not be around to talk about it the next day. It’s the harsh reality of driving vehicles at the rates of speeds we drive them, even we’re when driving under the speed limit.

With that said, we encourage you to keep your eyes on the road, and please slow down. We’re not saying to go 40 MPH. Please don’t (at least on the interstate). But please mind the law, keep the safety of others in mind and realize that all of us have somewhere we’re trying to go.
