On Tuesday, at the Troup County Board of Commissioners approved an additional change order for undercutting the pool area of the Griggs Center.

“Through this unforeseen circumstance, we hope to be looking at finishing Phase 1 of construction anywhere from October through December of this year,” Community Development Director Jay Anderson said.

The change order — $97,250 — was approved to help with additional resources for the construction of a parking lot on the north end of the building, approximately where the community swimming pool was located. On Monday, June 13, a field technician from Terracon Consultants inspected the property.

“When the tech looked at the grounds, he discovered the soil beneath the old pool area was not suitable for the parking lot,” Anderson said.

After further reviewing the proposed lot, an engineer from Terracon made a recommendation to excavate and export the poor soils and import acceptable fill. The area in question encompasses the entire plane of the parking lot and ranges between 1’ – 6’. The engineer also recommended that a technician from the company be present during the undercutting of the area to oversee the specific parts of the area that need the excavation of the unstable material.

In May, the Troup County Board of Commissioners approved a $576,114 change order to reroof the Griggs Center’s 20,770 square foot roof.

The full scope of the first phase includes remolding the existing smaller practice gymnasium into office space, a computer lab, a wellness center, study rooms and a concessions area.

Renditions of the project’s design elements and phase plans are currently available for viewing at the Griggs Center.
