LSPA to present Seussical Jr. this Friday

The Lafayette Society for Performing Arts  [LSPA] will present, along with Lafayette Theatre  Academy, the children-led performance of Seussical Jr. this Friday.

As noted in a press release, Lafayette Theatre Academy will unlock the imaginations of LaGrange when they bring the classic Dr. Seuss stories of Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Mayzie La Bird, the Whos of Whoville and other favorites in this larger-than-life production.

Co-conceived by Lynn Ahrens, Stephen Flaherty and Eric Idle, Seussical  Jr. combines Dr. Seuss tales using the plinker-plunker of many musical styles – ranging from Latin to pop, swing to gospel, and R&B to funk – as colorful as the classic books.

Valerie Longshore-Sargent, director and local theatre educator, said the vibrant creativity and her students bring the whimsical world of Seussical Jr. to life, all while communicating subtle themes and meaningful lessons of being imaginative.

Seussical Jr. begins with a young boy named JoJo who conjures up the Cat in the Hat with his powerful imagination and is whisked to the Jungle of Nool for a fantastical adventure.

There  JoJo learns of the plight of the tiny citizens of Whoville, who live on a planet the size of a speck of dust. Their sole protector is Horton the Elephant, who is the only one with large and sensitive enough ears to hear them bipping and beeping and playing their oompahs. The small world is threatened by Sour Kangaroo and the Wickersham Brothers, who in disbelief that a world could be so small, try to steal the dust-speck so they can cast it into a vat of Beezle-Nut oil.

Horton will hear a Who and cheerful chaos will ensue on Friday, July 1st, and Saturday, July 2 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at LSPA Black Box Theatre at 214 Bull Street in downtown LaGrange. To purchase tickets for Seussical Jr., please visit LSPArts.org or call LSPA’s business office at (706) 882-9909 during business hours.
