The Callaway senior football players were in for a treat Tuesday afternoon as they were given a free golf lesson at Point University Golf Club. It was a fun afternoon of bonding for 10 players – Blake Sheppard, Karmelo Burton, Hatavious Leslie, Alan Shuman, Sam Williams, Exavious Reed, Elijah Gunn, Joey McConnell and Dylan Nation – that will play a key role on the 2022 Callaway team.

“About four years ago Coach (Pete) Wiggins wanted a fun day for his seniors,” said Charlie Vincent, the instructor who gives the free lesson. “He reached out to me, and we decided to give them a free golf clinic.”

The tradition has remained as toward the end of every summer the Cavalier seniors are treated to a free golf clinic. The Point University coach, Maddux Lytle, was also on hand to help the Cavaliers with their short game.

“I’m just here to have fun with my teammates,” Williams said. “With this being our last year together, I figured this would be a fun way to spend the day.”

Williams, like many of his teammates, had no prior experience with golf but got a chance to try his hand at it on Tuesday. While many of the Cavaliers had no experience with golf, Sheppard came with some experience and came to the clinic with a purpose.

“I want to lower my handicap,” Sheppard said with a laugh.

For an hour on Tuesday, the Cavaliers senior football players got an afternoon to hang out and learn a little something in the process. Events like this keep the team chemistry strong as more than a few laughs were shared on the golf course during their time out there. As the Cavaliers look to get back to the mountaintop, building chemistry is the first step to that and Callaway is well on their way to building a strong bond.
