On Tuesday the Troup County Commission received an update on a current SPLOST V project, the Griggs Center.

Skip Smith, president of the Downtown LaGrange Development Authority (DLDA), gave the commission a detailed update on the Griggs Center and the timeline to have the project completed.

“The Griggs Center is approximately 33% complete right now,” Smith said. “Construction is moving at a pretty good pace. We anticipate completion still in April 2023.”

At this point in construction, crews have started installing concrete block walls and steel frames for the wellness center, computer lab, offices and concessions areas. Smith said they anticipate building steel for the lobby in the next three weeks.

The new location of the parking lot is moving along steadily. Currently, construction has closed off part of Glenn Robinson Drive to fully eliminate on-street parking, an initial safety concern going into the project.

According to County Manager Eric Mosley, he and Smith are working together in junction with the Callaway Foundation on a community pool to be replaced in the future.

“We do have some preliminary plans, it is currently in the infancy stage as more of a concept plan,” Mosley said. “It’s certainly an area the community desires. We certainly do need a really nice outdoor pool, that everyone on the community feels welcome, teach swimming lessons, and just have outdoor fun.”

In June, the commission approved a change order of $97,250 to help with additional resources for the construction of a parking lot on the north end of the building, approximately where the community swimming pool was located.

The full scope of the first phase includes remolding the existing smaller practice gymnasium into office space, a computer lab, a wellness center, study rooms and a concessions area.

Full renditions of the project’s design elements and phase plans are currently available for viewing at the Griggs Center.
