The LaGrange softball team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday as it traveled to take on Harris County and came back with a 14-3 defeat. 

“Tonight was a rough one,” head coach Craig Mobley said. “Where can I even start?”

The Grangers escaped the first inning scoreless before Harris County broke the game open with seven runs in the second inning. The Tigers hit two home runs in the inning, including a grand slam. 

The Tigers added an additional two runs in the following inning to give themselves a commanding 9-0 lead. 

LaGrange was able to chip into the lead with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Hudson Wood doubled to drive in Tatiana Dudley to get the scoring party started. Kimberly Reynolds singled to drive in the Grangers second run of the game. Reynolds stole home later in the inning to trim the Tigers lead down to 9-3.

Harris County answered back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to give themselves a double digit lead and kill off any momentum the Grangers had produced.  

The Grangers are a young team and that showed again tonight as they committed three costly errors which accounted for five of the Tigers nine runs.

“Harris beat us in every aspect of the game,” Mobley said “It’s hard to win games when you give away as many freebies as we did tonight.”

Zoe Thompson got the start on the mound for the Grangers. She only had three runs go against her record as the other four allowed in the second inning were unearned. 

Kaylee Foster came in for cleanup duty and pitched the last two innings as the game ended after four and ½ innings. 

Reynolds had the best game offensively for the Grangers as she went 2-for-2 with a RBI and a run scored. She totaled half of LaGrange’s hits in the game. Wood was also solid on the night offensively as she went 1-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Dudley got the only other hit for the Grangers on the night. 

“Kimberly swung the bat well and so did Hudson Wood,” Mobley said. 

LaGrange drops to 2-1 on the season as Harris County improves to 4-0. The Grangers will not be able to rest on their laurels as they get back to action on Thursday with a game against Marion County on the road. The Grangers are not scheduled to return to play in Granger Park until August 30.
