The Troup softball team suffered its first loss of the season against East Coweta on Wednesday. The Tigers lost 8-1 in a game that was called after four and ½ innings because of inclimate weather.   

It was a tough day at the office as Troup took on one of the softball powerhouses in AAAAAAA in the Indians.

“I’m proud of them,” head coach Ryan Simpson said. “We went in there knowing East Coweta was going to be tough, but we didn’t have many errors.”

East Coweta took a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. 

Troup was able to cut into the lead when Camdyn Bassett hit a single to drive in Ramsey Clark. The Tigers almost grabbed another run, but Haley Kitchens was tagged out at home plate on the same play. 

The Indians added two runs in the bottom of the third and an additional two in the fourth to close out the game. 

Despite the unflattering scoreline, it was a game of fine margins. The Tigers had nine base runners to the Indians 10. The difference: Troup left eight runners on base as the Indians came up with some timely hits. 

“We have to execute when we have runners on,” Simpson said. “At one point, the bases were loaded and I made a tough decision to send a girl with two outs and she was out at home.”

Anna Grace Keller got the start on the mound with Maggie McDonald getting clean up duty. 

McDonald was one of the bright spots on offense as she went 1-for-1 with two walks as she reached base in all her plate appearances. 

“I’m proud of her as always,” Simpson said. “She’s a senior, and she’s one of my go-tos for a reason.”

Bassett drove in the only run for the Tigers and went 1-for-3 in the game. Clark scored the game’s only run as she also went 1-for-3. Clark’s defense was also on display in the game.

“She was phenomenal,” Simpson said. “She didn’t let a ball get by her all night.”

Grace Keller had the only other hit in the game for Troup. 

This was the Tigers third straight game cut short to start the season.

Troup falls to 2-1 on the season. The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Callaway at 10 a.m before kicking off their region schedule against LaGrange at 2 p.m. It is the Hope for A Day tournament that will be in honor and memory of all those that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. 

“The teams in the county come together, and we play for a great cause,” Simpson said. “The girls are super excited, and we’re hoping for a good turnout and some good ball games.”
