It was a special night for the Callaway volleyball team in the Cavaliers gymnasium on Thursday night as the team celebrated a victory over rival Heard County as well their seven senior players and two managers. 

The managers were introduced first as Ary’ona Holmes was the first to take center stage. She joined the team this year as manager. After high school, Holmes plans to go to college to pursue a business degree and open her own dance studio.

“[Head Coach Shelby Goins] has influenced me to be great. She’s the reason I want to start my own business, and I will use my graphic design skills as part of my business,” Holmes said. “She is funny and always brightens my day. I love her.”

Next up was the team’s other manager Tykeria Foster. Tykeria has been a manager for all four years. She has also participated in track and field. After high school, Tykeria plans to attend  Savannah State to pursue a career in social work. 

“No matter what, [Goins] has been on my side the last three years,” Foster said.  “Anytime she notices me doubting myself, she encourages me.”

Next up was senior player Tristan Bussey. She has been playing volleyball for six years, two of those at Callaway. After high school, Tristan plans to attend college to become an engineer.

The second senior player to take the stage was Raine Hunt. Hunt has been playing

volleyball for all four years of high school. She also participates in soccer and flag

football. After high school, Raine plans to attend college to become an athletic trainer.

Kate McAteer is in just her second season at Callaway but has made a big impact. McAteer has been playing volleyball for four years, two of those at Callaway. She also participates in

soccer. After high school, McAteer plans to attend college to pursue a career in sports

management.

Amoria McFarlin has been playing volleyball for all four years of high school. She also participates in basketball cheer. After high school, McFarlin plans to attend college to pursue a career in political science.

Shelby Thompson played volleyball for three years at Callaway. After high school, Thompson plans to attend the University of Georgia and beyond that medical school to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.

Calia Williams has been playing volleyball for all four years of high school. She also participated in basketball cheer. After high school, Williams plans to attend Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University to become an OBGYN.

The play on the court was a reason for celebration as well. The Cavaliers dominated their rivals Heard County in two sets. Callaway won the opening set 25-13, but the second set was a nervy affair as the Cavaliers held on to win 25-23.

Callaway will be back in action next Thursday away to Upson-Lee.
