The Troup Healthy Housing Coalition will host a community conversation about renter’s rights at the LaGrange Housing Authority (LHA) on Tuesday evening.

The educational community forum is open to the public and will be held at The Phoenix Community Building.

LHA Housing Director Rena Boykin advised that the event is for the whole community, not just housing authority residents. She said the goal of the event is to help educate people on their rights as renters for properties in Troup County.

“One big issue would be knowing what’s in your lease and how to follow it,” Boykin said.

The event will aim to provide answers to questions renters might have about their responsibilities and their landlords.

“Who’s making repairs to your home? Who’s responsible once you sign the lease? Is the landlord responsible? What is the resident responsible for?” Boykin said when asked some of the questions that will be answered during the forum.

Another big topic will include renter’s rights with rate increases and how they work, she said.

Boykin said the event will also cover renter’s rights for when your landlord changes mid-lease.

“We’ve been having is a lot of investors coming in and buying up property here in LaGrange and Troup County,” Boykin said. “We want the renters to know their rights once someone has taken over the property.”

Boykin said representatives from the UGA Law Clinic will be on hand to field some questions.

The forum will be held The Phoenix Community Building at 207 Chatham Street in LaGrange on Tuesday, Sept. 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Dinner will be provided starting at 5:30 p.m.

For those unable to attend in person, the event will be livestreamed on the LHA Facebook page and via Zoom at https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84461253753?pwd=K2xRcVdNSG1zSTNVU2hwWVp1Y1U3dz09.
