Mackenzie Rhodes hits home run to help power Cavs to region win

It was an easy afternoon of softball for Callaway who destroyed region for McNair 19-0 in  a game that did not even see the completion of three full innings. 

The Cavaliers hammered the Mustangs with 16 runs in the first inning before adding three in the second. The offense could nary be slowed down with top performances up and down the order. 

Mackenzie Rhodes got it all started when she hit an inside the park home run in the Cavaliers first at bat of the game. She did not slow down from there, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored, two RBIs and a walk while showing some clinical base running by swiping two bases. 

The other star of the show was starting pitcher Kaitlyn Williams who pitched a no-hitter across three innings, She struck out seven batters in the process. Williams helped her cause offensively as well as she went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. 

First baseman Ava Shuford was also outstanding, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk. 

One of the team’s starting pitchers who rarely gets a chance to bat – Mackenzie Toney – got a chance to hit and did not waste the opportunity by going 1-for-1 with two run scored, two RBIs and a walk. Freshman Savannah Rice got in on the action too, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Emma Bryan had a hit and scored two runs. Kiera Trone came off the bench and gave the Cavaliers some more offense, going 1-for-1 with a run scored and two RBIs.

This win sent Callaway back over .500 (11-10) and improved its region record to 9-1. The Cavaliers will play Carrollton at 2:30 p.m. followed by a date with LaGrange at 4:30 p.m. as part of the first annual LaGrange Toyota Invitational.
