As we’re writing this, we’re preparing for a rare Thursday night of high school football in Troup County. There aren’t any local games on Friday, a rare occurrence.

And chances are it’s not going to rain a drop tonight or Friday night. However, that doesn’t mean the wrong decision was made.

With Hurricane Ian barring down on Florida’s west coast, Monday’s forecast showed the storm impacting Troup County on Friday, which would’ve wreaked havoc on football game schedules. 

Even if the weather were fair — meaning just light wind and rain — it’s likely the storm would’ve impacted attendance. Plus, there’s travel to worry about. No one wants their team traveling through tropical storm winds.

You have to prepare ahead of time for these types of events, and we applaud the principals, coaches and all administrators involved for doing so with Ian’s path so uncertain early in the week.

We also want to recognize LaGrange High moving its game time back 30 minutes to accommodate Troup High playing at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Callaway and Lafayette Christian, both playing on the road, also moved their games to Thursday. 

When you’re talking about safety and hurricanes, there is no time for second guessing. Thank you to everyone involved for changing plans so quickly and ensuring our students, student athletes and fans will be safe and still get to watch/play football.
