On Wednesday afternoon, local city and county leaders will meet to discuss potential projects for the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) referendum.

The meeting was called by the county to finalize the SPLOST VI capital improvement projects that will be asked to be paid for through the additional sales tax.

County and city leaders, including the board of commissioners and county manager, will meet with all three city councils, mayors, and city managers to make plans to finalize the list of capital projects the voters will be asked to approve in March 2023.

The approved projects will be placed on the ballot in March for local voters to approve.

Based on previous tax receipts, the county is estimating SPLOST VI receipts of $80 million, about $10 million more than SPLOST V.

If the SPLOST proceeds are split 45-45-5-5 as proposed, LaGrange and the county would have an estimated $34.2 million each for projects with West Point and Hogansville getting about $3.8 million each.

County Manager Eric Mosley said the county is going to ask the voters to approve funding for projects in three general areas.

“We’re focusing on basically three buckets. We’re going to put it all in transportation infrastructure, public safety and quality of life,” Mosley said.

One proposal would take $4 million of the projected $80 million off the top to pay for repaving Kia Blvd. due to its economic significance to the whole county.

No matter how the money is split, county and city leaders agree that Troup County needs the SPLOST to be approved to help pay for much-needed capital projects.

The meeting is open to the public and scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. at Great Wolf Lodge on Tom Hall Parkway in LaGrange.
