“Jenny” Virginia Trammell Copeland

On Oct. 14, 2022, the valiant life of “Jenny” Virginia Trammell Copeland ended peacefully at home with her family. She left an inspiring example for both effective leadership and love of family.

Jenny was preceded in death by her son Hayden McTyiere Copeland, parents, Theo and Mattie Ruth Trammell, sisters Jacquelyn Trammell Dodd and Rosalyn Trammell Ploch. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Dr. Robert Copeland, son Robert Theodore Copeland and granddaughters Maclain Copeland Davies and Savannah Copeland, whom she adored. She is also survived by two sisters, Beverly MaDan and Nancy Hargett as well as multiple loving admiring generations of Trammells and Copelands.

From an early age, Jenny was a natural leader, with her family, with her business, with civic and cultural affairs and with her church. Shortly after graduating Auburn University she married Dr. Robert Copeland. They began their life and long lasting love affair of 62 years in Birmingham, Alabama. After finishing his medical studies in both Birmingham and Boston, Massachusetts, they came home to LaGrange with their twin sons where Jenny quickly became immersed in her community.

Jenny was the first LaGrange woman to be made a member of a major bank board of directors. She was a director of Suntrust Bank of LaGrange and later Suntrust of Columbus. She had fundamental leadership roles in the development of the Troop County Historical Society, the LaGrange Symphony Orchestra, the LaGrange Downtown Development Authority, the Legacy Museum of LaGrange, and was a founding member of LaGrange Academy. Additionally, she served her church, First Presbyterian of Lagrange as a deacon and an elder. Jenny was ebullient and always full of life. She will be well remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend, community leader, concert pianist, and widely recognized realtor and owner of J Copeland Realty. She was truly brilliant. Her impact on so many lives will be long lasting.

The visitation will take place on Monday, Oct. 17, at First Presbyterian LaGrange in the Fellowship Hall from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. The service honoring the life of Jenny Copeland will begin at 1:30pm in the sanctuary. There will be a graveside service to follow at Shadowlawn Cemetery. Donations can be made in her honor to the Cardiac Rehabilitation Center of the Copeland Heart and Vascular Center at the Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center. (706) 845-3563.
