Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As the election nears, you’re probably growing tired of all of the Warnock, Walker, Abrams and Kemp commercials taking over your TV breaks.

For at least the next few weeks, it’s not going to get better.

Georgia remains the ultimate battleground state, a place where the Senate majority may be decided and a state that could have a Democratic governor for the first time since the early 2000s. There’s a lot to be decided in the Peach state.

But what you won’t see on your TV are stories about the local races on the ballot. What appeared to be a fairly light political season locally changed drastically with the passing of LaGrange City Councilman LeGree McCamey in January.

That opened up a seat on the city council, with five individuals hoping to get the position but knowing they’ll have big shoes to fill. Those candidates are Ashley Cousin, Leon Childs, Israel Barsh, Quay Boddie and Maiya Dowell.

All five are expected to participate in Thursday night’s election forum organized by the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce and broadcast on The LaGrange Daily News Facebook page.

The event is held at the chamber, and the public is invited, but the seating in that building can be limited depending on how many people show up. We encourage you to attend if you can, but if not, it’ll be streamed on the LDN page, where it can be re-watched through Election Day.

Beyond the local city council race, the State Senate District 29 will be featured, as well as House District 137.  Senate 29 has incumbent Republican Randy Robertson facing off against challenger Ellen Wright.

District 137 will feature incumbent Democrat Debbie Buckner and Republican Justin Rickett.

We expect the forum to provide a lot of information and we hope you’ll go into with it an open mind. Early voting started Monday, but for anyone who waits a few days, we think you’ll have a much better idea on all of the candidates after Thursday night.

We’re happy for the chance to partner with the chamber for this event again.
