On Nov. 12, the LaGrange Fire Department will host its first Christmas Tree Giveaway.

Sargent Matt Oubre, who heads the event, said the idea of giving away Christmas trees came from wanting to spread a little joy around the holidays.

“We wanted to do something for the public,” Oubre said.

“Our fire chief, John Brant, spoke with Walmart Distribution Center, and we were able to have some Christmas trees donated to us.”

The event will be held at LFD’s maintenance shop located on 1210 Hogansville Rd. behind Dunson Soccer Park for two days.

The first day will be on Nov. 12 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., permitting if there are still trees available the second day will be held on Nov.19 from 9 a.m. to noon.

Oubre said the trees are be limited to one per vehicle, first come, first served. The trees given away will be seven-foot pre-lit, artificial white trees, he said.

“I think we have around 200 Christmas trees that we’re able to give away,” Oubre said.

“We want to make sure that everybody that needs a Christmas tree has one. We don’t want to see anybody going through the holidays that would like to have a Christmas tree but can’t afford one due to hard times.”

Oubre said everything is tough for everyone right now and sometimes having something that is not a necessity, like a Christmas tree, is more of a luxury

“At this time of year, everybody needs a little bit of joy in their life,” Oubre said.
