LaGrange police are investigating a fatal vehicle collision that occurred on LaFayette Pkwy on Jan. 23.

Susan Harris, 62, passed away as the result of a two-car collision near the intersection of LaFayette Pkwy and Union St, according to a press release from the LaGrange Police Department.

The collision occurred around 4:50 p.m. Police were in the area and responded upon hearing the crash to find Harris injured and trapped in the driver’s seat of a white Mitsubishi Mirage. Her 62-year-old male passenger was also injured, according to the incident report. 

Harris was later airlifted to Grady Health Center and her passenger was taken to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center.

Officers then made contact with the driver of a 2002 Honda Accord, who police say needed a translator due to a strong language barrier. The driver was asked for his driver’s license, but he presented an “International Driver’s Document” and a non-state-issued identification card.

Police say they then ran his information and verified he did not have a valid driver’s license, according to the incident report.

The driver of the Honda was arrested and transported to the LaGrange Police Department where he was cited for driving without a valid license and released.

After reviewing nearby security video, the report said it was determined that Harris was at fault for failing to yield to the Honda.

On Feb. 1, LPD was contacted by the Troup County Coroner’s Office and informed that Harris had passed away from injuries suffered during this collision.
