The Hurricanes have blown in.

Led by coaches Darwin Gomez and Rigo Villitoro, the 10u parks and rec team is enjoying their first season of indoor soccer.

“This is a chance for us to teach them about soccer while keeping them indoors and comfortable,” Villitoro said. “We try to give them a fun environment and keep them away from bad habits.”

The indoors presents some challenges that the coaches have had to adjust to.

“It is a big difference,” Villitoro said. “This is our first time coaching indoors, so we are learning about the differences. It’s a good learning experience for the players and the coaches.”

There is little to no glory in coaching youth sports with the parks and rec department. It is all about the love of the game and the love for the young kids learning how to play a game the coaches adore.

“I’m thankful I have a job now that lets me spend time with my kids and coach soccer,” Villitoro said. “It’s a blessing to be able to coach my little girl.”

Soccer has been a part of Villitoro’s life since he was born. It was his first sport and first love, and he looks forward to passing on the knowledge he has accumulated over the years to young kids falling in love with a game that he has been passionate about for years.

“I try to teach them some skills, and we are having fun learning how to pass off the walls in indoor soccer,” Villitoro said. “We want to improve their skills and get them to stick with the sport. It is a good habit to have.”

The winter league Hurricanes team consists of 12 players — Aaliyah Ransom, Jase Vital, Rylie Martinez, Hannah Villatoro, Bentley Shaw, Emerson Shaw, Anna McBrier Hackley,  Kooper Smith, Sadie Morman, Garrett Miles Aalto, Jayden Kirkland and Adalie Pursley.
