Baseball is back.
Callaway got off on the right foot on Monday as they beat 4A Shaw 4-3 on a chilly winter’s night.
It was anything but easy as the Cavaliers had to shut down a late rally attempt by the Raiders.
The Cavaliers were able to gather some early momentum in the first inning when senior catcher Blake Sheppard walked, scoring CJ Stephens. Julian Dukes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded later in the inning to drive in Landon Alsobrook.
Shaw was able to get one back and half the deficit in the top of the second inning but Bruce Hubbard was able to limit the damage by striking out two straight batters to close the half inning.
The Cavaliers were able to strike back and take a two run lead again when Brantin Swanson hit a RBI single to drive in Hubbard.
Sheppard got his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning when he grounded out to drive in Hubbard.
The Raiders were able to score two runs in the top of the sixth inning but a throw out by Sheppard caught a runner trying to steal second base for the third out to end the half inning.
Swanson closed out the game in style with two strikeouts and a flyout for three quick outs in the top of the seventh inning. Swanson was 2-for-3 with an RBI while also pitching four innings in relief and striking out seven batters on only four hits.
CJ Stephens got the start on the mound for the Cavaliers and went three innings, allowing just three hits and one run on five strikeouts.
Hubbard ended the game as the most effective offensive threat for the Cavaliers, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a walk. The Cavaliers only got four hits in the game compared to Shaw but were able to get some timely hits as well as some big walks — five in total.
Callaway starts the season 1-0 and will be back on the diamond away to Heard County on Tuesday.
