In the modern age of everyone having access to the internet and all of its features, it’s important to pay attention to the tricks and gimmicks aimed at vulnerable persons. 

From women to children to impressionable teenagers and older people, being aware of the types of scams and people wanting to “hang out” can be essential in preventing a dangerous situation. 

The Troup County Sheriff’s Office recommends following SMART guidelines:

S – SAFE: Always keep personal information safe. When speaking to someone online don’t give way personal information such as your full name, social security number, bank information, your home address

M — MEET: Meeting up with someone you’ve only “met” online can be potentially dangerous. When deciding to meet up with someone for the first time, do it in a public setting and tell someone you trust where you’re going and who you’re meeting. 

A – ACCEPTING: Everyone loves free stuff right? Always think carefully when accepting something online. Typically, if any offer online sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Some “free” offers may contain viruses, phishing software and malware. 

R – RELIABLE: This is a given, but you can’t always trust what you see online. Always double check information and use verified sources. 

T – TELL: Always tell someone when someone shows or sends you something or makes you feel uncomfortable, worried or unsafe.
