Heartbreak.

A day after Valentine’s day, Callaway had its heart broken as the boys basketball team let a double-digit fourth quarter lead slip away in a 55-53 loss to Redan on Wednesday.

The first three quarters went to plan for Callaway who looked in control for the first 24 minutes.

The opening quarter was a bit of a struggle for both offenses, but Callaway was able to do just enough to take a 12-9 lead after the first eight minutes of play. DeShun Colman led the way for the Cavaliers with six points in the first quarter. Coleman finished the game as the Cavaliers’ leading scorer with 12 points.

The offenses sparked to life in the second quarter and so did Natorrius Truitt, who scored all six of his points in the quarter. The Cavaliers were able to extend their lead to 30-24 heading into the halftime break.

Callaway continued to stay in control on the other side of the break. Jayen Edwards scored six points for the Cavaliers in the third to help them extend their lead to double-digits heading into the final quarter of play. Edwards was second on the team with 10 points in the game.

That’s where it all unraveled for Callaway. The Cavaliers were outscored 20-8 in the fourth quarter as they watched their chances of competing for a region title fly out the window with their lead.

Callaway fell to 12-12 overall. The Cavaliers will play Landmark Christian on Friday in the third-place game. Callaway will enter the playoffs as a third or fourth seed depending on the outcome of the game and will be on the road in the opening round.
