LCS destroys Springwood for first win of the season

The Lafayette Christian baseball team bombarded Springwood 11-4 to earn its first win of the season on Monday.
The Cougars had to dig deep after the Wildcats captured an early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Lafayette Christian bided its time and struck back to tie the game in top of the third inning when Noah Childree delivered an RBI double.
The floodgates opened in the following inning with the Cougars plating eight runs. Braden Firth got the action started with a two-RBI double to give the Cougars their first lead of the game (3-1). Childree got his second RBI of the game when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 4-1 Cougars. The Cougars got their next five runs in the inning on two walks and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded and two Wildcat errors as Springwood came unraveled in the inning.
Springwood was able to chip in the lead in the bottom of the fifth but still trailed by seven runs heading into the sixth inning.
The Cougars were able to stretch their lead out with Dustin Ogle and David Karvelas each hitting RBI singles in the top of the sixth.
The Wildcats got a couple consolation runs in the seventh inning but could not find a way back into the game after imploding in the fourth inning.
Firth was the main man offensively for the Cougars. He was the only Cougar with multiple hits, going 3-for -5 with a run scored and two RBIs.
The Lafayette Christian defense was not as sound as expected, committing four errors. The defense was bailed out by its trio of pitchers who controlled the game. Paul Bastini got the start and the win, pitching three innings and only allowing two hits and one earned run on five strikeouts. Karvelas and Dolton Colquett each pitched two innings in relief and picked up right where Bastini left off.
Lafayette Christian to 1-1 on the season. The Cougars will be back on the diamond on Tuesday at home versus CGAA.
