In the aftermath of Sunday’s storm, the Troup County Sheriff’s Office banded together once again help distribute tarps and water to those impacted by the storm.

Water and tarps were also given out after the Jan. 12 tornado.

This time the distribution worked as a drive-thru and allowed those getting supplies to remain in their car while a team on the scene loaded tarps and cases of water into their vehicle.

Captain Shane Butler said the drive-thru had assisted approximately 12 vehicles and had given away 39 tarps and 47 cases of water by Monday afternoon.

“We had a gentleman that came by and asked us what we need. Now we have five cases of water coming from the Columbus-Coca-Cola company,” Butler said.

Angela Kelley of West Point said being able to get some much needed resources was a relief.

“When the storm hit, I was worried about how we were going protect our house from the rain. Many told me to just get a tarp, but when you only have so much money — long story short, this was right on time and I am thankful for it,” Kelley said.

West Bun of Pine Mountain said his home received roof damage and said there were approximately 300 trees down in the area.

“We had a lot of shed damage but mainly trees. Luckily none of them were close to the house, but it took some shingles off,” Bun said.

Bun said he learned of the distribution from his brother whose home also sustained damage from the storm.

“I didn’t know if they would let us get one. but I think this is an awesome thing they are doing. Our roof was already leaking through and the sheetrock was showing,” Bun said. “Our next step is to get it covered and see what the insurance people say.”

Bun said he’s lived in Troup County for decades, and until Sunday had been lucky enough not to be in the direct path of a tornado.

“I wished it wouldn’t have happened. I’ve lived here 45 years and this is the first time I experienced a tornado. I hope I won’t have to again at least for a while,” Bun said.
