The Lafayette Christian baseball team saw its season come to an end on Monday as the Cougars were swept in two games by the Cherokee Christian in the postseason. Because of the amount of homeschoolers on the teams, they did not play in the GAPPS state tournament.

 GAME TWO:

CHEROKEE CHRISTIAN – 5

LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN – 4

With their season on the line, the Cougars could not extend their season one more game and fell to Cherokee Christian 5-4. 

It was a highly contested game with Cherokee striking first with two runs in the bottom of the second. The Cougars were able to quickly tie the game up with two runs in the top of the third. David Karvelas and Braden Firth drove in a run apiece with back-to-back singles. 

Cherokee retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Cougars had a quick reply to tie the game. Noah Childree and Connor Hudson scored on an error to tie the game. 

An error allowed Cherokee to score the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. Errors proved to be the home team’s undoing as they committed seven in the game. 

The Cougars got two runners on base in the top of the seventh but could not capitalize and extend their season. 

Karvelas got the start on the mound for the Cougars, pitching a complete game while striking out seven batters. He also had the only multi-hit game from any player, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Cody Batastini, Ayden Thornton, Childree and Firth all had a hit apiece.  

 

GAME ONE:

CHEROKEE CHRISTIAN – 15

LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN – 2

Game one got off to a competitive start before Cherokee took over late to rout the Cougars 15-2. 

Cherokee stormed out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the Cougars came right back and tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The first run came in the form of a Batastini special with older brother Paul driving in younger brother, Cody, with a double. Firth scored on a passed ball later in the inning for the second run.

It was all Cherokee from there, scoring a run apiece in the following two innings before blowing the game open with four runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth. 

Landon Childree, Noah Childree and Dustin Ogle all had a hit apiece for the Cougars. 

Paul Batistini and Dalton Colquett split the time on the mound, but neither could find any sort of rhythm.

The Cougars finished the season 15-7.
