Any time there’s a lot of change in an organization, people start getting a little uneasy, especially if it’s a public school system.

And it’s fair to say the Troup County School System has seen its fair share of administrative changes over the last few weeks. Several principals, including Troup High Principal Niki Watts; Long Cane Elementary Principal Katie Brown; and Callaway Middle Principal Todd McRae, have all either already left or have announced that they are taking other jobs.

We’ll also note that following Thursday’s board meeting, at least two of those jobs have already been filled, though moving Christina Keith from Hillcrest Elementary leaves another principal spot open.

Throw in the loss of Arlene Fowler, executive assistant to the superintendent, who was included on the May human resources report, and it feels like there’s been a lot of change.  But it’s also not all that uncommon for TCSS to have a lot of change, especially at the end of the school year. Every August we write stories on new principals in new positions around the school system. 

The school system’s human resources report is always multiple pages long, regardless of the time of year. People get new jobs. New needs arise. Many teachers retire. It’s a constant flux and change.

That’s the case again here. 

That doesn’t mean there won’t be more change. There certainly will be, even during the summer months, as TCSS hires to replace these positions and looks for new teachers to add to the system.

For the most part, parents just want to know who is leading the building where their child goes to school, and they want to have confidence in getting the job done. 

We encouarge parents to take advantage of any meet and greet type events being held with new principals that allow you a chance to get to know the principal.

Change is inevitable, and we’re seeing plenty of it around Troup County right now, including in the school system.
