Police say the 16-year-old suspect in the shooting death late Friday night will not be charged as an adult.

The juvenile suspect is accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Montavious Gunn.

LaGrange police responded to the 900 block of Fourth Ave. on May 27 around 12:30 a.m. in reference to a subject who had been shot.

Officers arrived and located Gunn, who had a single gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was transported to Wellstar West Georgia Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.

After further investigation by LaGrange Police Department detectives, the undisclosed 16-year-old juvenile was taken into custody and charged with involuntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Police Chief Garrett Fiveash advised that after discussions with the district attorney, the suspect is going to be charged as a juvenile and the case will be handled by juvenile court.

Fiveash said the juvenile is being charged with involuntary manslaughter because there does not appear to be any malice with the shooting.

This incident is still under investigation.
