The Callaway football team hit the road for its pre-season scrimmage on Thursday, taking on reigning back-to-back 1A state champions Bowdon.

The Red Devils took the first lead of the game, taking the opening possession down the field and going ahead with a touchdown with 7:37 left to go in the first quarter.

Callaway had an instant response with Blake Harrington connected with Bryceton Sanders on a 65-yard touchdown strike on the first play from scrimmage for the Cavalier offense.

Bowdon answered right back with a touchdown to take a 14-7 lead. Callaway took the ensuing possession right down the field and tied the game up when Harrington connected with BreShun Hall on a 6-yard touchdown. It was a breathless first quarter that ended 14-14, but the Red Devils would quickly recapture the lead early in the second quarter with another touchdown.

Callaway had a chance to tie the game up at 21 all, but could not convert on a fourth down attempt just inside the 10-yard line.

Bowdon took a two-possession lead late in the first half, going into halftime with a 28-14 advantage.

The Cavaliers came out of halftime, received the ball and marched right down the field for a touchdown punctuated by a 10-yard touchdown run by Harrington.

The young Cavaliers and Red Devils got in on the act late in the third and fourth quarter as the starters got rest.

Callaway will kick off its season in Rome against Cass on Aug. 16.
