Lewis Philemon Champion passed away peacefully on September 4th in San Anselmo, California at the age of 97.
Born on May 7, 1927 in Chipley (now known as Pine Mountain), Georgia, Lew’s life was a testament to hard work, dedication & a deep love for his family & roots.
He was the youngest of 10 children. Lew developed a lifelong love for the land & farming.
He attended Georgia Tech, then went on to serve his country in the Navy during the close of World War II.
Lew was the devoted husband of Evelyn (Evie) Champion for 63 years before her passing in 2010. They made their home in San Anselmo, CA.
He was the loving father of Judy Champion, Sally Psaila & Cindy Champion. He was affectionately known as “Papa” to 5 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren.
His professional journey was a remarkable one. He started as a limousine driver for executives at Pacific Bell in San Francisco. By retirement age at 55, he reached the position of chief engineer, completing a successful 30-year career.
Lew’s many passions centered around giving of himself to help others & serving his community.
His hobbies & interests included church, Boy Scouts, square dancing & travel. He was an active member of various Masonic Lodges & he served as Master Mason of Marin Lodge #191.
Lew’s life was a story of determination, generosity & love. He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength & unwavering devotion to his family & community.
He will be deeply missed & forever remembered.
Lew Champion was a regular supporter of the Chipley Historical Center.
