The Troup girls basketball team rode a second-half surge to beat Whitewater 56-32 and stay undefeated in region play.

It was a gritty performance as the Tigers were down their most explosive offensive player in junior guard Sheniyah Philpot, who did not dress for the game with an injury.

A win did not always look in the cards for Troup. The Tigers offense struggled to find any success early without their star playmaker and subsequently trailed 16-13 at halftime. The offense got it going in the second half as the Troup defense completely shut down the Wildcat offense in the final two quarters, allowing just 16 total points in the second half.

The Tiger offense exploded in the third quarter with 26 points. Troup was led by Raygen Godfrey, like they were all night. The senior finished with 24 points, 17 of those coming in the second half. After a scoreless first quarter, Jaz Williams got it going and finished with 11 points.

The name of the game was defense for the Tigers. After they let up 10 points in the first quarter, the Tigers did not allow the Wildcats to crack double-figures in a single other quarter in the game.

The final score was much more flattering than the game initially felt. The first half and the early goings in the third quarter were extremely competitive before the Tigers settled in and blew the game open in the final 12 minutes.

This game also served as a homecoming of sorts for Whitewater head coach Gracie Brunel. While not a native of Troup County, the current Wildcat coach played her entire collegiate basketball career at LaGrange College before serving as an assistant coach with Troup High last season.

Troup improved to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in region play. The Tigers will return to the court on Friday on the road to Spalding for another region contest.
