Briannah Morgan has found her next home. The LaGrange High senior made it official on Wednesday, signing to continue her academic and cheerleading career at Andrew College.
“I’m really excited for this opportunity because they are just starting up their program so I can help be a part of building it,” Morgan said. “Once I went down there on a visit I knew it was the place for me.”
Morgan, a four-year letterman for the LaGrange cheerleading team, has done it all and seen it all during her time with the Grangers. She went from a quiet freshman to a real leader for the competition and basketball cheerleading teams during her senior year.
“I knew there was going to be a bunch of younger girls on the team this year and I knew that they would be looking up to me and the other seniors,” Morgan said. “It was a lot of responsibility, but thankfully we had some other seniors on the team.”
College cheerleading was not always on Morgan’s radar. The LaGrange High senior did not think cheering at the next level was more than a dream until her junior year when she began taking the sport more seriously in general.
“It was something that I’ve wanted to do since I was a little girl, but I didn’t think it was possible,” Morgan said. “Once my junior year came around I started to take it more seriously because I knew I didn’t want to give cheering up when I go off to college.”
The mats and the sidelines have been home for Morgan. She first started cheering when she was about five years old and has never looked back from there.
While Morgan has already had to say goodbye to the competitive cheerleading squad at LaGrange High, she is holding on tightly to her last few days/weeks as a basketball cheerleader.
“It’s been a great year and it really hasn’t sunk in that it is almost over,” Morgan said with a glimmer of sadness in her eyes. “This was probably the best season I’ve ever had. The energy and team were so positive this year.”
Morgan enjoyed her senior season of competitive cheerleading, but it was not without its fair share of challenges. She transitioned from a base, the spot she occupied during her first three years as a Granger, to a backspot for her final run with LaGrange.
“It was a lot because I had to teach some of the younger girls how to base while I was also learning how to be a backspot,” Morgan said.
Morgan will be leaving behind big shoes for some of the younger cheerleaders to fill at LaGrange High.
“She has been a phenomenal asset to our team,” said Brandi Lou, the LaGrange High competitive cheerleading coach. “She is a beautiful tumbler. She has beautiful jumps and she is a beast when it comes to stunting.”
