The Troup girls basketball team blew the doors off Spalding on Thursday for a comfortable 66-15 region win on senior night.

The Tigers threw the gauntlet down early and did not give the Jaguars an inch of life in the game as the home side led wire-to-wire.

The first quarter was a Troup avalanche with the Tigers capturing a 22-2 lead after the opening quarter of play.

The vaunted Troup defense was on full display early, blocking shots, getting steals and making life extremely difficult for the Jaguars on offense.

Troup head coach Carla Thornton was able to go deep in rotation early on Thursday, getting her starters some valuable rest as they will play again on Friday as a part of a back-to-back which will also serve as the team’s third game in four days.

The rotational players came in and did their jobs, but the defense was not quite as dominant in the second quarter. It did not matter as the rout was on early and the Tigers rode the momentum into halftime, taking a 36-13 lead at the break.

Mercy was shown to the Jaguars as both the third and fourth quarters were shortened by two minutes.

The refs might have shown mercy with the clock, but the Tigers kept pouring it on, outscoring the Jaguars 18-2 in the third quarter.

Troup’s defense closed out the game in style, not allowing a single point in the fourth quarter until the dying seconds. The Tigers allowed 11 points in the second and just six points combined in the other three quarters.

The Troup offense was largely spread around with 11 total players scoring on the night. Sheniyah Philpot led the team in scoring with 12 points while senior Raygen Godfrey was the only other Tiger in double figures for scoring.

Godfrey was celebrated alongside fellow seniors Jaz Williams and Nasha Daniel after the game as part of senior night. All three players will be key if the Tigers are to make a playoff run this season.

Troup improved 14-7 overall and 10-5 in the region. The Tigers currently sit fourth in the region standings and will play their final regular season game against region opponent Fayette County on Friday. The Tigers won the encounter at home earlier in the season by a margin of 71-35.
