Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Troup boys basketball rallied from a lackluster start to beat Spalding 65-57 for an important region win.

The Tigers would score the first two points of the game, but the Jaguars would answer with a 6-0 run as both offenses struggled in the first quarter. By the end of the first, Spalding had built a 13-4 lead as the Tigers limped through one of their worst quarters of the season.

Troup revved its engine in the second quarter and the Tigers finally retook the lead when Jalen Brown sank a deep 3-pointer with 1:30 on the clock. At 18-17 it was the first lead for the Tigers since they led 2-0 in the initial seconds of the game.

DeJaylen Campbell would sink a 3-pointer just moments later before Brown closed out the quarter with another 3-pointer, giving Troup a 24-21 lead at halftime.

Troup took that momentum that built up to close the first half into the second, starting the third quarter on an 11-2 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game.

The Tigers would take a 47-38 advantage to the fourth quarter after the Jaguars were able to get a basket to go at the end of the third.

Troup would start the fourth quarter on an 8-0 run which all but put the game out of reach of Spalding.

The Jaguars would make the home faithful sweat a bit late in the contest when they cut the Troup lead down to five points with a little over a minute to play, but never seriously threatened to tie the game or take the lead.

Brown and Dee Moreland led the way for the Troup offense on Thursday, scoring 24 and 17 points, respectively.

Troup improved to 14-7 overall and 8-7 in region play. The Tigers will close out the regular season with a region matchup at home against Fayette County on Friday. Troup lost the initial encounter with Fayette County 68-64 in a thrilling overtime contest.
