The Troup boys basketball team closed out the regular season on Friday with a massive 55-49 region win over reigning region champions Fayette County.

The first half was back-and-forth with Fayette County taking a 14-13 lead after the opening quarter. The Tigers of Troup flipped the script in the second quarter and took a 25-24 advantage into halftime. Jalen Brown would make a shot with just seconds to go in the half to send the home team to halftime with the lead.

It was just one play, but it gave Troup just the momentum it needed heading to the second half.

The Tigers rode that no run through the third quarter and were able to stretch their lead out to six points heading to the fourth quarter.

Fayette County continued to fight and eventually trimmed the Troup lead down to just two points with just over a minute to play, but the Tigers had a response from DeJaylen Campbell, who sunk a layup to give the home side its two-score lead back. The senior point guard would then go on to nail a pair of pressure free throws with 16.7 seconds left to ice the game. These were the only four points that Campbell scored, but they were quite possibly the biggest four points in the game.

Brown and Desmon Cunningham led the Tigers in scoring with 13 points apiece. Gavin Gates finished with 11 points.

Troup ends the regular season having won four of its last five games and has a record of 15-8 overall and 9-7 in region play. The Tigers are heading to Region 2-3A as the no. 5 seed and will need to move into the top four to secure a spot in the state playoffs.
