The LaGrange baseball season is getting into full swing and the Grangers were back on the diamond on Saturday, splitting a doubleheader with Prince Avenue Christian.
GAME ONE:
LaGrange – 2
Prince Avenue – 1
The opening game of the doubleheader featured a pitcher’s duel that LaGrange was able to come out on top of. Mason Calhoun got the start on the mound for the Grangers and had a no-hitter going through five innings, before exiting the ball game between the fifth and sixth innings with eight strikeouts to his name.
Grady Westmorland and Caden Wood each pitched an inning and each allowed just one hit.
Despite the no-hitter going from Calhoun, it was actually Prince Avenue that got on the board first with a run in the top of the fifth inning on an error.
The Grangers had an instant response in the bottom of the inning. Westmoreland, who went 3-for-3 from the plate on opening day, delivers an RBI single followed by Calhoun being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive home the winning run.
Westmoreland once again led LaGrange in hits as he did in the opener, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Laken Tippy, Jackson Bozeman and Cooper Stephens all had a hit apiece for the Grangers.
GAME TWO:
LaGrange – 3
Prince Avenue – 6
The Wolverines once again drew first blood, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning and once again LaGrange had an instant response.
The Grangers would tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the first and had a chance to take the lead but Brandon Bennett was tagged out sliding home.
Calhoun, who started the first game at pitcher and game two at catcher, got the scoring started for the home team with a sacrifice fly. Bennett hit a single to drive in the second run of the inning before Kayden Sutton tied the game with a one-run single.
Prince Avenue quickly took its lead back with a run in the top of the second before adding one more in each of the next two innings to stretch the lead out to 6-3.
LaGrange threatened to score in the seventh inning, but never could trim the deficit down.
The Grangers used a platoon of pitchers with Caleb Allen getting the starting nod. Rob Skinner, Westmoreland and Wood would all pitch at least one inning in relief with Skinner getting the most work with three innings on the mound.
Westmoreland kept up his hot start to the season, going 2-for-3 for his third multi-hit game in as many appearances.
Skinner also had two hits while Calhoun, Bennett, Tippy and Sutton all had one each.
WHAT’S NEXT:
The Grangers will host their fourth straight game to open the season on Monday when Harris County comes to The Branch. LaGrange will wrap a busy stretch on Tuesday at home against Northside (Columbus) as the team will end up playing five games in the span of five days.
