The Troup boys soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Callaway.
“To come over here and win a cross-county rivalry like this feels good,” Troup’s Yuri Kim said.
Kim would open the scoring just shy of midway through the first half when he struck a sensational free-kick that nestled into the corner of the goal.
“I just saw the goalkeeper shifting over a little bit and saw a small window and took it,” Kim said.
Callaway had a chance to open the scoring just minutes before Kim’s goal, but Rickey Vaughn’s shot was saved.
A back-and-forth first half would play out from there with Troup taking a narrow 1-0 lead into halftime.
Braidyn Patrick would find the net early in the second half to put Troup up 2-0.
“It feels good, but we have to keep working and pushing to get better,” Patrick said. “We can’t be satisfied with this.”
The Cavaliers would fight and scrap the rest of the way and got back into the game when Jaiden Bailey slotted home on a pass by Angel Velasquez with just eight minutes to go in the game.
The Tigers would fortify the defense, batten down the hatches and hold on for a thrilling 2-1 win.
“The fans were booing, cards were getting handed out, but we just focused on ourselves and the game and didn’t let anything affect us,” Patrick said.
Brayden Morris was credited with six saves in goal for Callaway and consistently kept the game close with his play.
Troup moved to 1-2 on the season, earning the first win under new head coach Myles Sargent. The Tigers will be back at home on Thursday against Shaw.
“It means a lot, Myles has been a coach here since before I got here and now he is getting a chance to lead us,” Patrick said. “It feels good to do this for him.”
Callaway fell to 2-3 and has lost three in a row after winning the first two games of the season. The Cavaliers will look to get back on track on Friday at home against North Springs.
