Initially thought to only be straight-line winds, the National Weather Service confirmed that an EF0 tornado touched down early on Sunday in the Northeastern part of the county.
The tornado occurred between 4:25 and 4:27 a.m. in a primarily wooded area. However, one structure sustained roof damage.
The max winds were 85 miles per hour and it spanned 75 yards wide and 1.5 miles long.
Troup County Emergency Director Zac Steele said there had been reports of damage to a wood line yesterday, prompting the NWS and Troup County EMA to investigate. On Thursday afternoon, the NWS confirmed it was a tornado.
Steele said it was difficult to determine the tornado’s path because it primarily affected timberland and farmland.
On Sunday, the NWS issued a Tornado Watch at 2 a.m. for much of Western Georgia. The following morning, the Troup County EMA announced that over 100 trees were down from the resulting winds. There was one injury related to the storm and the patient had been treated and released by Sunday evening.
