The Callaway baseball team cruised to their first win of the season on Monday, beating rival Heard County 6-4.

The Cavaliers took an early advantage with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Slade Hunt got Callaway on the board with a one-run single. Blake Harrington would drive the following run home with a triple before Luke Taylor got an RBI groundout to round out the scoring in the inning.

The Braves would eventually get on the board in the fourth inning as a passed ball allowed a runner to reach home. Heard County would tie the game with a two-run homer later in the inning.

The Cavaliers were unfazed and retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Hunt drove a runner home with a single. The lead would be short-lived with Heard County responding with a run in the top of the fifth, tying the game at four runs.

The Cavaliers dug in and eventually found the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Blake Harrington delivered a one-run single. Luke Taylor would follow with a double to send Harrington home and give the team an insurance run.

Jaxon Duncan got the start on the mound for the Cavaliers and pitched a no-hitter going through three innings. The Braves eventually found a rhythm on offense and Duncan exited after a quality four innings of work in which he allowed just three hits on four strikeouts.

Hunt would relieve Duncan on the mound in the top of the fifth and pitched the rest of the game. Hunt slammed the door on the Heard County offense, allowing no hits and striking out four batters in his three innings of work on the mound.

Duncan, Hunt and Harrington all had two hits apiece for Callaway. Taylor, Lashun Gates, Brody Swanson and Wesley Williams all had a hit apiece.

Callaway improved to 1-3 in the season. The team is relieved to get the first win of the season after dropping the previous two games by a run apiece.

The Cavaliers will return to the diamond away to Whitewater on Wednesday.
